Essex Rockerz were amongst the first to take out this trackside wall at Battlesbridge, Essex. Local writers from the area who painted here were Mean, Shan, Chase (you can just make out an outline from ’87 in the background) and Shot… My memory is kinda blurred after all these years.

After a little reminisce… Mean went on to become ‘Debate’ and knocked about with Busk & Skire. Later after getting busted for graff, he moved into music and formed ‘Azuli’ records which was famed for their ‘Another late night’ compilations. His claim to fame was discovering the singer Duffy. He’s now moved into writing and currently has a book called ‘My Dad Is Deader Than Your Dad’.

Shan also got busted for graff. He brought out a UK hip-hop 12″ white label called ‘Ruffian Culture’ with some boys from Chelmsford. He was a proper nutter but a funny one at that! Despite his size, he could never really handle his drugs and almost got us all bagged one night at ‘Leisure Lounge’ for winning the gurning championships. That was the last time I saw him. We left him up there as he spent the night in Hoxton nick. Last I heard he’d moved to Southampton and was a doing a seven stretch for armed robbery!

Chase… Still see this old boy. Proper B-boy from round these parts. One of the first writers in the area, good breaker and all-round creative fella! He was always banging on about ‘Urge’ and how good his pieces were. He formed ‘Sy-Kick’ – a hardcore outfit along with Mark French that produced a number of quality 12″s and toured with the Prodigy. They appeared on Top of the Pops under their ‘Ruff Drivers’ moniker and now releases music under his own name Bradley Carter.

Shot… Well, shot is SHOT. Still kicking about, still down and (probably) still getting bagged! He dropped a piece with Mean & Shan at my local… I think it said ‘Tempo’ in copper and black (sounds like a lame colour scheme but the piece was rockin’) way back in ’88. Last time I saw him in Southend he had me and ‘Veks’ in stitches talking about old times while he was off his nut on pills.

Who said my memory is a bit blurred..?
